Sally Tourangeau Quilts Currently on Display at AVH
Sally Tourangeau of Gorham has spent a lifetime “Creating a Legacy of Beauty and Workmanship” in quilting. A selection of her masterful quilts is the new exhibit at the guest artist gallery in the Androscoggin Valley Hospital Cafeteria. An Artist’s Reception will be held in the AVH Cafeteria from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Wednesday, July 11. Friends of quilting and Sally, and the public at large, are welcome to come meet Sally, view her beautiful quilts, and enjoy lunch in the Cafeteria at the same time.
Sally says, “Learning to quilt was an adventure that began when I was very young. An elderly lady, possibly a babysitter, taught me to hand sew small squares which turned into a doll quilt. My mother was a very good seamstress and made most of my and my sister Kathleen’s clothing.” Sally also spent 21 years as a costumer for Theatre North.
“Home and costume sewing eventually branched out to quilting. Several friends were doing it, so I decided to try my luck in this medium. Lo and behold, I took to quilting with a passion. My first teacher was Louise Fortier. I later joined the Material Girls Guild, which has been a delight. New friends, new ideas and color designs, classes in techniques, the list goes on. Quilting teaches patience, the long hours of choosing design fabrics, sewing, pressing time, and, best of all, meeting new friends who share your love of quilting and encourage you along the way.”
In 1994, Sally authored an award-winning poem, “The Quilter,” the origin of “Creating a Legacy of Beauty and Workmanship” at the lead of this article.
